Husband brought home old sewing machine, what to do about cigarette smell?

My husband brought home an old sewing machine from the 1940's it still works great and came built in with the sewing table and everything. It smells horribly like smoke, like someone has been smoking around it for many years how do I clean it up would good old pledge work or is that not safe enough?Husband brought home old sewing machine, what to do about cigarette smell?
Scrub it with something like Murphy's oil soap and, if you can, put it outside to air. If there's a breeze it may help blow away some of the foul air inside the machine. Just make certain you protect it from the elements. Unfortunately, you can't tinker with it too much because you risk tainting the working parts.

I would try that. Pledge anywhere should work without hurting the machine. Also, try some Lysol, it could ';disinfect'; it.

It is from the fortys so the chances are knowing how popular smoking was then, the person smoked and their parents. If that does not work why not go on a website of a well known sewing machine company and see how to clean it up.
